DIY Baby Mobile

Quick, easy, and inexpensive…three of my favorite words when it comes to crafts!  This mobile is great because it hits on all three of those, plus it’s completely personalize-able to fit any nursery’s colors and theme.  I came up with this idea after trying to find a mobile for my daughter's owl themed nursery that didn't cost $50 or more.  Can you believe how much mobiles cost!  Seriously!  This one will run you under ten bucks for all the materials.

Materials:
-One dowel, cut into two 10 inch pieces.  My dowel is about 4/16ths of an inch in diameter.
-Waxed paper or other surface protector
-Craft paint (acrylic).  I used Plaid #410 Lavender for this one.
-A small paint brush for applying glue for glitter
-Hot glue gun
-Scissors
-A metal split ring (like the kind that you put keys on).  Mine is a 24 mm silver one.
-Heavy, clear filament or fishing line.
-10 pre-painted wooden cut outs.  Get 5 different designs, and get two of each kind.  Look for ones that are painted nicely, as the paint job quality really varies on these!  Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Wal-mart all have a pretty good selection.
-Optional: glitter, glue, googly eyes, large beads to put on the end of the dowels

Directions:
    1.       Cut dowels to length and sand the ends of the dowels to make smooth. Plug in your glue gun to heat up.
    2.       Remove the price tags from the backs of all the wood cut outs (otherwise they show in places).
    3.       Lay down wax paper.  Paint the dowels a color that coordinates with the wood cut outs you are using.  I held one end down with one finger and rolled it while painting, then painted where I had held it down last.  Let dry completely
    4.       Cut a six inch piece of line.
    5.       Cross the two sticks to make a plus sign, measuring to make sure you have them crossed exactly in the middle.  Put a pencil dot on each one where they should cross, then glue the sticks together with hot glue. Tie the 6 inch piece of line around the crossing point, getting it stuck in the still-warm glue.  Reinforce the joint between the sticks by putting more hot glue on all sides.
    6.       Tie a knot in the line so it forms a loop at the top.  String the split ring onto the loop.
    7.       Cut a 16 inch piece of line.  Run a line of glue down the center of the back of one of the wooden cut outs, then lay the end of the line in the glue.
    8.       Apply more glue to the back of the wood cut out, then lay the matching wood cut onto it, creating a sandwich with the line inside of it.

    9.       Repeat Steps 6 and 7 again for the other 4 designs.  But make the line 20 inches, 24 inches, 12 inches, and 8 inches long.  NOTE: if the two wood cut outs don’t match up when sandwiched together because the design is not symmetrical, be very careful about where you put the glue so it doesn’t show.
   10.   Tie the 24 inch one to any one of the four stick ends just using a knot.  On the next stick, put the 20 inch one, then on the next put the 16 inch one, then on the last stick put the 12 inch one.  Don’t worry that the mobile is not balanced yet.  Put the 8 inch one in the center.

   11.   To balance it, scoot the knot for the heavier ones toward the center, and scoot the knots for the smaller/lighter ones toward the edge.  Once it is perfectly balanced, put a drop of hot glue on each string, attaching it to the stick in the right spot.  Cut off the tails from the knots.
   12.   Decorate the cut outs with glitter, googly eyes, gems, or whatever decorations you want to add.  I used the same purple glitter on each one to tie the pieces all together, then added other glitter colors as accents.

   13.   Tie a 24 inch piece of line to the split ring.  Determine where you want to hang the mobile, then tie a knot in the end of the line at the correct length, then hang from the ceiling with a push pin. All done!  Cute, huh!!!

God Bless America!

...My Home Sweet Home
A Painted Wooden Sign Tutorial

I've been itching to make a patriotic sign for the fourth of July to hang in my front entryway.  I considered lots of different phrases before settling upon this one, choosing it because of its nods to home and God.

Making it was a good learning experience for me because I had to figure out how to print out the mirror image of words, and I had to paint.  I am absolutely the world's worst painter; in fact, I dread it, avoid it, and despise it.  The template I made helped assuage my painting panic because it works as a pattern and eliminates the need to free-hand the letters.  I'm sure your sign will turn out much better than mine, because I stink so badly at painting.

I'm not gonna lie...this project will take you a while, probably about 2-3 hours because you do have to paint over all those letters; but it is cute in the end.

Materials:
-One piece of wood, cut to 8 x 17.  I used MDF.
-A sawtooth picture hanger, OR  a drill, a small drill bit, and some twine (for hanging)
-White, blue, and red craft paint (acrylic).  I used Americana brand "Deep Burgandy" for the red and Plaid brand “Cobalt Blue” mixed with a little bit of black paint for the dark blue.
-a VERY fine paintbrush
-a wide sponge paint brush
-18 inches of red 3/8 inch wide grosgrain ribbon
-a black and white computer printer + 3 sheets of paper
-a paper cutter
-scotch tape
-an iron
-a hot glue gun
-the template provided (see below)

Directions:
1. Cut the wood to size.  Add two holes for a hanging ribbon if desired, or you can add a sawtooth later in step 9.

2. Paint the front and sides of the wood with white paint by using the wide sponge brush, and let dry. Add a second coat and let dry.

3. If your wood is a soft wood, like pine, print this template (regular facing wording), making sure to select  in the printer set up under “Page Scaling” the option ”Tile all pages.” Trim the excess paper off the first and last sheets, tape the sheets together with scotch tape, then lay the words carefully where you want them on the wood (I put mine a little too low so there is a two inch gap above God!), tape securely, then trace the letters with a ballpoint pen to get the words transferred.  Need help?  See this website for tips on this lettering technique.

4. If your wood is a hard wood, like mdf, which doesn't dent easily with a ballpoint pen, instead you will need to print this template (mirror image wording), making sure to select in the printer set up under “Page Scaling” the option ”Tile all pages.”  The words will print out backwards, as if you are looking into a mirror.  Trim the excess paper off the first and last sheet, tape all three sheets together with scotch tape, then lay it carefully in place over the wood (I put mine a little too low so there is a two inch gap above God!) and press down to get it to stick to the paint a little.  Holding the template securely in place with one hand, iron on the low setting by tracing each letter with the tip of the iron only, checking each letter as you go to see if it has transferred well enough to be useful to you (make sure there is no water in your iron!) If you are going to paint any words red or another lighter color besides dark blue or black, iron more lightly on those parts because otherwise it will be hard to cover up the black ink of the transfer.  If the paper starts to stick to the wood, cool the iron down, and be sure you are only using the tip of the iron.  Stuck paper can be removed by scratching it off with a clean, dry fingernail.

No, this picture isn't backwards!  This is the mirror image template, taped together
Ironing the words...use only the tip or the iron, not like I did in this picture!
The transfer left on the wood
Just in case you want to learn how to make a mirror image file, see this page here

    5. Paint in the letters with the blue and red paint, covering the transfer completely.  Go back and touch up the letters once they have dried to fill them in evenly.

  6. Touch up any areas on the white background that need it, with the white paint.  Let dry.
  7. If desired, distress the edges and/or the whole thing with sand paper, an emery board, or an electric sander.
  8.   Hot glue the grosgrain ribbon across the top and bottom edges by wrapping it around the side edge and gluing it to the back.
  9.  Add the sawtooth hanger to the top center.  I glued it down with hot glue instead of nailing it on because I thought the nails it came with might poke through to the front.

     There you have it!

My Menu Board

Well, it's finally done.  After creating 106 dinner ideas for it, I finally finished my menu board, printed out all the recipes and planned the next four weeks of meals.  I got the idea for my menu board from this one here, but since it didn't have the meal ideas with it, I had to do that part.  So here's how I made my menu board.

Materials:
-12 x 16 frame with glass, with two hanging hooks when turned sideways (I actually used one without glass then had to get glass cut to fit)
-2 coordinating colors of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper, 2 pieces of each (I used brown with cream polka dots and red)
-Letters for the days of the week and the word Menu.  I used a sheet of preprinted letters I bought about 10 years ago called Heartstrings upper medium BB014 from bearypatchinc.  I don't think they are around anymore.  You could use any stickers or cute letters you print and cut out yourself.
-White card stock
-Meal ideas that go across.  You can print out 106 dinner ideas here.
-1 skinny box, like the kind a small flashlight comes in.   Mine was 1 1/4 inches wide by 6 inches tall.  This will be used to make the holder for the meals you aren't using this week.
-7 small binder clips
-a hot glue gun and glue
-a paper cutter

Instructions:

Open up the frame and pull out the cardboard. This is what you'll glue the background paper to.  If the frame doesn't have a good sturdy piece of cardboard in it, just use a piece of posterboard or cardboard you have handy (I actually a sturdy cardboard mailing envelope).

Cut two strips of the contrasting (I used red) color, one to go behind the days of the week and one to go behind the unused cards (also covers the seam from the backgound paper.  My red strips were 1 1/2 inches wide and almost 3 1/2 inches wide. Both were 12 inches long.

Glue the background paper down, using a small strip from the second piece of paper to cover the last bit where the contrasting color won't be covering.  Use your hot glue gun.

Glue the contrasting strips down with your hot glue gun.

Hot glue the letters for the days of the week and the word menu down.  Be sure to leave space along the edges where the frame will cover.  Lay them all out first before gluing to make sure everything is spaced evenly.

Put the frame back together and close it up. Everything else gets glued on top of the glass.

Glue the binder clips so that they line up with each day of the week.

Cut the box in half to make two smaller boxes and cover each half with paper, just like you are wrapping a present.  Glue the two box halves side by side then add the contrasting paper as decoration.

Print out these phrases: "It's Been A While" & "Recently Used" onto a piece of white cardstock and cut to fit the storage box; glue down with hot glue.  Note: I used the font "Throw My Hands Up In The Air" set on bold for all the wording.  Glue the box onto the glass with hot glue.

Print out the meal ideas onto white cardstock, but print the ones for Leftovers, Going Out to Eat, and Eating at someone Else's House on the accent color paper instead so they are easier to find.  Cut all the meal ideas into strips.  My strips are 7 inches long and just over 3/4 inches tall.  Laminate the strips if desired.

All set to go!  Happy meal planning!

Mother's Day Gift Idea

Here is a simple and inexpensive, yet meaningful, Mother's Day gift for a mother to give to her mother.

It actually didn't cost me anything to make because I used scraps I had around the house, but if I had needed to buy everything, it bet it would have been about 5 dollars to make.  Woo hoo!!

I was inspired by this vinyl sticker I saw and by a MOPS craft I made a few weeks ago, and I thought, hey, I can make a sign for my mom!  I have one child, so I changed the wording to say child instead of children.

Things you'll need:
-a thin sturdy piece of wood cut to 3 3/4 inches by 12 inches.  I used mdf.
-a drill and a small drill bit
-a computer and a printer with color ink
-Microsoft Word
-white school glue
-a piece of 12 x 12 scrapbooking paper in a plain light color like cream
-a paper cutter
-An awl (hole borer)
-18 inches of twine, cord, or ribbon to hang it with.  I used dark brown hemp cord from Walmart.
-Ribbon scraps that coordinate with the sign color, about 16 inches of each

Directions:
1. Go to your local hardware store and pick up a thin but sturdy piece of wood, and have them cut it to size.  You might want to buy a bigger piece of wood and have them cut you a bunch of signs, because you can also make cute Laundry signs, a sign for your husband's mom, etc.

2. When you get home, drill holes in the top corners for hanging with a small drill bit.
3. In Microsoft word, create a new file.  Make the paper size 8.5 by 12 and the orientation horizontal.  Decide what colors you want to use.  My mom's favorite color is blue, so I used dark blue for most of the words and a lighter blue for the words Mom and Grandma.
4. Insert a Word Art, and in it type the main body of the message in a plain font (I used "Bookman Old Style" for the font) but leave three spaces at the beginning so you can make the first letter larger, and leave an empty space where the words Mom and Grandma are going. I used the first style of word art that popped up...it looks like white letters outlined in black.
5. Insert another Word Art and make a fancy first letter.  I used "Edwardian Script ITC" font for my letter T.  Drag it to the right spot.
6. Insert another Word Art and make the word Mom in a fancy script.  I used "Scriptina" for the font.  Drag it to the spot where Mom goes.
7. Insert another Word art and make the word Grandma in the same fancy script you used for Mom.  Drag it to the right spot.
8. Cut your scrapbooking paper so it's 12 by 8.5 so it will fit in your printer.
9. Print out your design. (You might want to print some practice ones first to make sure your design fits onto your board properly.)
10. Use your paper cutter to cut it so it fits onto the board properly.
11. Use white glue to glue the paper to the board.  Don't worry about covering up the holes.  Spread the glue around evenly before pressing the paper onto the glue to avoid bumps.  Flip upside down and press down to adhere the paper well.  DO NOT USE HOT GLUE...it will make ridges in the paper.  I know this because I tried that the first time, then had to rip it off and start over on the other side of the wood!  See that ugly glue and paper residue on the back?!
12.  To open up the hanging holes again, use the awl to poke a tiny hole through the back, then go to the front side and push the awl all the way through the hole.
13. Knot twine or cord and make the hanger the length desired.
14. Use small pieces of different colored ribbon to tie onto the hanging cord to decorate it.
15.Write a personalized message on the back side and be sure to include the year!

That's it!

Elementary School Songs

I went to a Lutheran grade school in Southern California.  There, I sang in the choir (I think we all had to).  As a result, there are times in my life when a tune comes rushing back and I just have to sing it.  We did lots of musicals, I think one a year.  And we sang in church at least once a year.  So here are some of those songs that jump back into my mind every so often.

Everywhere I Go               by Natalie Sleeth, 1975

VERSE 1: Everywhere I go, the Lord is near me.  If I call upon him, he will hear me.  Never will I fear for the Lord is near, Everywhere I go.

VERSE 2: In the dark of night should things alarm me, ever in his sight no ill may harm me.  I will be of cheer, for the Lord is near, everywhere I go.

BRIDGE: He is with me day by day, He will be my strength and stay.   From His path I will not stray but follow in His way.

VERSE 3: In the coming days of joy or sadness, I will praise his name with songs of gladness, for to me it's clear that the Lord is near, everywhere I go.

Repeat verse 1

Here's the tune (except this version does not include the bridge.)

Cherry Tree Chop
We did the musical "Let George Do It" one year, and I don't remember much from it, but the lines "cherry tree chop, chop chop" and "Thaaaat's cooperation" pop into my head randomly from time to time.  I actually found a link to all the words of the entire musical.  Here it is:  Let George Do It .  I also found a youtube video of another school performing the first part of it.  Here ya go.

Welcome to the Family  by Psalty / Kids' Praise
We sang this song to welcome Pastor Blanke and his family to our church.
Here's a youtube link to listen to it.

Welcome to the family
We're glad that you have come
To share your life with us
As we grow in love and
May we always be to you
What God would have us be
A family always there
To be strong and to lean on.

(refrain)

May we learn to love each other
More with each new day, may words of love be on our lips
In everything we say
May the spirit melt our hearts
And teach us how to pray....
That we might be a true family.
(repeat)

Like the Gentle Rain           by Mary Lynn Lightfoot
My BFF and I sang this song as a duet at some point in elementary school.

Like the gentle rain
nourishes the flowers,
like the gentle rain
helps tiny rivers grow,
Like the gentle rain falling from above us,
we are nourished by God’s love.

Our hearts and our souls thirst for God’s wisdom and love, which like gentle rain God sends from above. We’re each very special in God’s loving sight. The Lord is our shepherd, let us follow in His light.

Like the rain feeds all the flowers,
like the rain helps rivers grow.
Like the rain falls from above.
We are nourished by God’s love.

Down By The Creek Bank
This is another one of the musicals we did as a whole elementary school.
Here's a youtube link to another church group performing it.
